How to Reach Tirap

Tirap has no railway station or commercial airport inside the district. Most visitors use a train or flight into Assam, then continue by road to Khonsa. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for Arunachal Pradesh—see Travel permit before you travel.

By train

  • No train line inside Tirap—get down in Assam, then continue by road.
  • Nearest stations: Dibrugarh ~120 km · Tinsukia ~110 km · Naharkatia ~70 km.
  • Railhead → Khonsa: daily buses & taxis · ~3 hr from Dibrugarh/Tinsukia · ~2 hr from Naharkatia.
  • From Delhi: Rajdhani & Brahmaputra Express via Guwahati → Book on IRCTC.

By road

  • Guwahati ↔ Dibrugarh / Tinsukia — state & private deluxe buses (incl. night runs).
  • Dibrugarh / Tinsukia → Khonsa — APSTS daily; many taxis & shared sumos.
  • Khonsa ↔ Itanagar — direct APSTS bus (daily).
  • After any railhead, the last leg into Tirap is always road—confirm timings locally.

By air

  • Fly to Dibrugarh (regular links from Guwahati & other cities).
  • Airport → Khonsa — taxi or bus (same road corridor as above).
  • Helicopter (limited, seasonal) between Dibrugarh and the capital region—verify on the district site before planning.
