Patkai heights
Ranglam Ho & Rangham area
A summit and ridge belt above forested Tirap valleys—long views toward the Patkai, cool air, and trails best done with daylight, warm layers, and local guidance.
Overview
Most visitors stage day hikes or short camps from Khonsa or nearby villages, pairing Ranglam with drives on the Patkai belt or cultural stops in the Laju & Olo area. Confirm ILP / permits, road access, and weather before committing to a ridge night.
Landscape
Why trek here
Open ridges catch sunrise and sunset light across layered hills; on clear days the horizon feels endless. The climb is a proper hill walk—steep in places—so fitness, footwear with grip, and trekking poles help.
Unlike lowland sightseeing, summit plans should include extra water, a wind shell, and a torch even for late returns. Mobile signal is unreliable; tell your host or hotel your expected return time.
On the trail
- Day hikes for ridge photos and short rests at viewpoints.
- Clear-sky evenings for stargazing—carry a red torch to preserve night vision.
- Respect village boundaries and grazing areas; do not light open fires except where locals approve.
Before you set out
Monsoon months bring slick mud and low cloud—many groups prefer October–April for safer footing and views. Hire or join a local guide when offered; tracks can fork and weather can change quickly.
Leave no trace, pack out wrappers, and avoid loud music on ridges. For gear, cash, and phone tips see the FAQ.
Return to the Places of interest hub for other destinations, or Festivals if you want to align a trek with village events.
